The USGA golf-ball testing timeline, in plain language
What a current equipment decision does—and does not—change for a party.
The official update
The USGA and The R&A published an implementation discussion in January 2026 about updated Overall Distance Standard testing for conforming golf balls. The regulatory timeline belongs to formal equipment conformance. It does not mean a guest at a private simulator event needs to buy a new ball before taking a turn.
What event guests need
Bring the Tee. provides balls and tees. For a mixed-skill group, the practical questions are how to take a turn, where the target appears, and whether the game records a score. An attendant helps with those basics. A launch monitor may have ball requirements for specific measurements; we confirm the event's monitor and ball setup in the quote.
What planners should avoid claiming
Do not promote a party as a test of a proposed rule or compare ball performance without controlled measurement. The manufacturer's simulator features and governing bodies' conformance rules address different questions. Our event is built for guest participation, not equipment certification.
Where to check the rule
Read the USGA and The R&A's current notices for the actual effective dates and technical language. News and implementation details can change; this note should be reviewed before publication and whenever the governing bodies revise their guidance.
